I've had an idea kicking around for a while to do a series of film noir style shots, but doing them in color. I'm a huge fan of the old 50's film noir movies, so I have a lot of good ideas for this series planned out.

A lot of the shots I want to do will require somebody to model for me, but I also picked up an old mannequin head off of ebay to play around with. Here is my first shot from this series using that mannequin head:

Noir

I'd love to get some opinions on this shot. I was trying to light this so it wasn't completely obvious that this was a big, fake, plastic head. Not sure if I pulled it off or not.

I like the shot but if I did it I would spot light his chin or mouth instead of his neck. I understand that you couldn't do it because it is a mannequin. Also different engle would be more dramatic.

I think the composition and lighting is perfect. The expression that the manequin has seems also perfect, like it was designed for this shot. Not all models can be that expressive.
The only thing that isn't good is that is visible non-human. First I thought it was computer generated, that would have been easier to fix. The skin lacks human imperfections, scratches and dots...

PS: perhaps the hat has a little strange position? like is on a closer plane in the foreground, maybe including more of it would help, while it will also move the head deeper within background. just a thought.

Great Concept.

It appears a little dark, but this might be just on my monitor (LCD). Like Ericphoto said maybe spot the chin. Use color gels to highlight different areas.

Because it is a Mannequin, black and white, sepia or other tones may mask that fact. Also playing around with different color gels may add more drama to the scene.

But the idea and what I see so far looks great. I look forward to seeing the end results.

great idea .. I have a book around here somewhere on 50's hollywood portraiture. I'll dig it out later tonight and flip through to see what tips it might have in it for you. I do know that all the lighting back then was extreme hot lamps, usually the same ones used in cinematography, so you might wanna get some hot lights from a hardware store if you dont have any already ... and do a lot of spot metering :)

The idea is great. Work on it. This photo is too dark for me. Try also to isolate the mannequin on white background.

The idea is great.I think although that the left part is too dark.A bit more soft those darkness part of the image should be better. And maybe in the next shot for this image will you use a human model. In this form I see this image on the cover on a CD game.Anyway super idea.

Shadowed face is typical for the old 50's movies. Another typical element that might help in this case is the intensive back light /you can use also color light/. This will give you the column shadows on the oval surfaces.

I have a single one notice .. i think the image is too much on center... just try a new one with the left shoulder. I think the image it will be more powerfull and give to image an exact direction to look.
Anyway, i like verry much this shot... it is a wonderful ideea.

Thanks for all the input...Definitely helping me out.

Here is the second in my Noir series:

Private Eye

Once again, I didnt have anybody handy to model for me in this shot, so the ole mannequin head was put into use once again. An odd contraption with the head mounted on top of a vaccuum cleaner and floor-stand fan, wrapped in a trenchcoat. Here is what this looked like from the other side, without the trenchcoat:

Not very pretty, but I think it actually worked out quite well.

Hey Todd, I saw your file one hour earlier and wanted to send you a comment. I wouldn't have thought about such setup, I knew you are using the manequin but the sillhouete seems so real, I could bet the trenchcoat is real. A fan? How did that come up?

I can't make any suggestions, the files seems perfect, with enough free space for copy, for those that really need it. The most subtle thing is that the letters are mirrored, looks like the viewer is inside the detective's room, which adds interactivity to the scene. Knock, knock....

Well done!

Thanks!

The fan gave a little bit of width to the "body". With just the head on the vacuum, the trenchcoat didn't wrap around very well, and it just looked like a head on a pole. The top of the fan worked as the shoulders for the coat to set on. I was basically just grabbing anything within reach trying to rig this up, I was really surprised when I went around to the other side of the door and saw how it looked.

VERY cool! They say 'necessity is the Mother of invention' - how true - good for you!

Very convincing! (the PI guy that moonlights as the vacuum guy - he finds all the dirt - :) :) )

It looks great.

Lighting looks right on, and it has that retro look for the era you are shooting for.

Good job.
